Advances in tattoo removal have made it possible to remove unwanted tattoos with ease. One effective way to do this is through laser tattoo removal. You can get back your clear skin, as long as you follow tattoo removal post-treatment care provided by your aesthetician. Proper post-treatment care is important in getting optimal results from this treatment.
It takes about four weeks to completely heal from a laser tattoo removal treatment. If you’re considering tattoo removal, here’s what post-treatment care is going to be like.
Immediately After Treatment
It’s normal to feel a mild burn sensation and discomfort after tattoo removal laser treatment. Your aesthetician may provide you with some soothing antibiotic cream to relieve symptoms. Your skin may appear discolored, however, this will subside within days after treatment. Bruising, swelling, blisters, and scabs may also appear in the treated area, especially within the first 72 hours. If you see blisters forming and popping, do not touch them. This may irritate the skin further. Follow your aesthetician’s orders and apply antibiotic cream, if necessary.
Swelling, Blistering, and Pain
There are ways to minimize swelling and overall discomfort of the area after laser treatment. You can apply a cold compress to the area over the sterile dressing. This will help reduce inflammation and pain symptoms. If you can, keep the treated body part elevated. Take pain medication as recommended, but make sure not to take aspirin as it can cause bleeding.
Showering
Ask your aesthetician about when you can shower after the treatment. You can usually shower two hours after the procedure, with the sterile gauze on the treated area. Make sure not to direct the water to the treatment site and avoid soaking in a tub. Pat the area dry using a clean towel. You can replace the gauze, however, make sure to apply the antibiotic ointment first.
Sunblock
Once your aesthetician gives you the green light to remove the sterile gauze, do not expose the treatment area to direct sunlight. Use the highest level SPF you can get and apply it every time you head out (even on a cloudy day) for at least three months after the procedure.
After Four Weeks
Generally, it takes about four weeks for the treatment area to heal. The healing period may vary from person to person. It also has a lot to do with how fast you heal and your overall health as well as how strictly you followed your aesthetician’s post-treatment care instructions.
Repeat Treatments
Tattoo removal with laser treatment often requires repeated sessions – especially for large or dark tattoos. If this is the case, your aesthetician will discuss how often you will need treatment. Make sure to follow post-treatment care instructions after every session.
